What is an ophthalmologist?

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors, or osteopathic doctors, who complete a minimum of 12 years of specialized eye training.  They are licensed to treat a variety of eye diseases, may participate in scientific research, and most perform eye surgery.  Ophthalmologists may specialize in particular parts of the eye or specific eye conditions, while others are Comprehensive Ophthalmologists treating a variety of eye conditions. 

Some reasons you may see an ophthalmologist include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of eye disease
  • Eye surgery
  • Eye injections
  • Laser eye procedures
