LASIK Surgery: Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve probably heard of LASIK surgery, but do you really understand what this revolutionary procedure is all about? We’ve got answers to some frequently asked questions all potential LASIK patients need to know!

What is LASIK Surgery?

Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), is a vision correction surgical procedure. LASIK involves the use of a laser to gently reshape your cornea, correcting irregularities causing you to be nearsighted, farsighted, suffer from astigmatism, or experience a gradual loss of the ability to focus (a condition called presbyopia). Illinois Eye Center’s fellowship-trained LASIK surgeons use the Wavelight Refractive Suite, a completely blade-free technique that is the most cutting edge LASIK technique currently available.

Who is a Good Candidate for LASIK Surgery?

The only way you can truly know if LASIK is a good option for you is to schedule a free consultation, but in general the best candidates:

  • Are between 18 and 59 years of age
  • Have a healthy cornea
  • Have had no significant changes in their vision in the last year

Certain conditions such as autoimmune disorders or some corneal diseases may affect eligibility. If it turns out that LASIK isn’t an option for you, there are some great LASIK alternatives you can explore.

Does LASIK Really Work?

In short – YES! An impressive 97% of LASIK surgeries are considered successful, and the post-surgical satisfaction rate among LASIK patients in the U.S. is an equally exciting 95.4%. Even better is the fact that in the United States, LASIK has been widely available since the 1990’s and there have been zero reports of long-term side effects.

Does LASIK Hurt?

Though LASIK is described as a surgical procedure, it is done on an outpatient basis and both discomfort and recovery are generally minimal. Patients are locally anesthetized before the procedure starts and they’ll receive eye drops to take home with them afterwards to help keep eyes moist and free from swelling or infection. The best part – no stitches!

Is LASIK Expensive?

Most insurance companies consider LASIK surgery to be an elective procedure and therefore do not offer coverage. But, think about how much you pay for glasses, contact lenses and supplies like saline solution and lens cleaner. How many times have your glasses gotten in the way of an impromptu game of flag football on Thanksgiving? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to snorkel and actually be able to see the fish? What price can you really put on finally having a barrier-free view of the world? Don’t let short-term costs keep you from long-term happiness!
