Cataract Surgery Recovery: What to Expect After Your Surgery

Cataract surgery is a simple procedure that helps patients improve their overall quality of life. It is one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States, and patients continue to regain their independence each and every day.

So what happens once your procedure is complete? The recovery process is as brief and easy as your surgery will be, and by following your doctor’s instructions, you will be on the road to recovery in no time.

Here’s a look at the typical cataract surgery recovery timeline and what you can expect at each stage of the process:

Immediately After Surgery

This is the time to take it easy and relax. Your cataract surgeon may ask that you do not participate in strenuous eye activities the same day as surgery, such as reading and watching TV, but most surgeons will allow you to resume those activities the next day. One important thing to remember is that you will not be able to drive yourself home from the surgery, so make sure you coordinate a ride ahead of time.

In the Days Following Surgery

The first day following your surgery, your eyes may experience mild sensitivity to touch, a sensation of grittiness or scratchiness, or see glares around lights. These experiences are normal for the first couple days following surgery, but they should begin decreasing in frequency each day. You may start seeing a difference, but follow up appointments with your doctor will ensure you’re on the path to recovery.

The First Month After

At this point, your eyes will most likely be completely healed and you can really begin enjoying the results. With your doctor’s approval, you should be okay to use your eyes as much as you would like and continue participating in your favorite activities. In fact, the more you use them, the better adjusted your brain and eyes will become to your improved vision.

Two Months Later and Beyond

You should be feeling and seeing like you did before your cataract developed. You will be able to live your daily life without the burden of cataracts. Keep in mind, the importance of scheduling yearly comprehensive eye exams with your doctor to ensure your eyes are healthy.

Cataract surgery is a simple and painless procedure. Enjoy the independence that cataract surgery allows you to have and live the life with the vision you deserve.
