Cataract Surgery: A Look at IOL Options

Cataracts typically occur as part of the natural aging process and develop slowly over a number of years. Others may be related to inherited genetic disorders that cause other health problems, increasing the risk of developing cataracts. Cataracts can also be caused by medical conditions such as diabetes, trauma or past eye surgery.

Whatever the cause of your cataracts, Illinois Eye Center (IEC) will work with you to help you decide when cataract surgery is needed. Cataract surgery is a simple procedure to regain very good, if not better vision than before. If your cataracts have progressed to the point of seriously impairing your vision, and as a result, are affecting your daily life, then it’s time for you to consider surgery.

Cataract surgery is typically done on an outpatient basis. During surgery, your clouded lens is removed and replaced with a clear plastic intraocular lens (IOL). IEC offers the most advanced IOL choices available to our cataract patients, with the goal of providing the best overall visual results. Here’s a quick look at the type of IOL options we offer:

Monofocal Lens Implant

  • A Monofocal Lens Implant provides quality long distance vision without the need for glasses
  • May still require glasses for intermediate/close distance vision

Toric Lens Implant

  • Designed to correct astigmatism
  • Offers sharpest focus at long distances
  • May still require glasses for intermediate/close distance vision

Advanced Technology, Multifocal or Accommodative Lens Implants

  • Advanced Technology Intraocular Lens Implants, also called Multifocal or Accommodative IOLs, provide a full range of vision, offering the possibility of seeing well at more than one distance
  • Less dependence on glasses following surgery

IEC uses the latest technology to assess each patient’s cataracts in order to help determine the best IOL to fit their lifestyle, needs and personality. Contact Illinois Eye Center, at (309) 243-2400 or visit our website for more information on cataract eye surgery.
