Workplace Eye Wellness Month: Protect and Prevent Eye Injuries

Each year, about 300,000 Americans visit an emergency room due to a workplace-related eye injury. The number of eye safety hazards in various industries and occupations is surprising, and it is important to make sure you are keeping your eyes safe and healthy throughout your day.

March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month, and Illinois Eye Center wants to help you keep your eyes safe and healthy. This month, take time to learn all the potential eye hazards in your workplace, and ensure your organization has emergency procedures in place should eye injuries occur. Eye safety procedures and hazards will vary depending on the industry, but we have listed some common ways to detect, protect, and prevent eye injuries during your workday.

Potential Eye Hazards in the Workplace

Eye hazards can come in many different forms, and they vary depending on the industry and occupation. Some potential eye hazards in the workplace include:

  • Projectiles: These are loose particles that can get into your eyes and cause damage. Common projectiles include dust, concrete, metal, and wood.
  • Chemicals: Chemicals—whether they are liquids or fumes—can harm your eyes, so it is important to know what kinds of chemicals you are working with and their potential dangers.
  • Radiation: Whether it comes from the sun or from an artificial source like lasers, ensure you are wearing protective gear when working with radiation.
  • Blood-borne pathogens: These are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans.
Protect and Prevent Eye Injuries

It is important to know the potential eye hazards that you are working with and the appropriate eye gear that will provide you with protection. Investing in the right eye protection can help you prevent potential eye injuries and keep your eyes safe in the workplace.

Steps to Take in an Emergency

If an eye injury occurs, immediately seek medical attention. The sooner you see a doctor, the sooner you can be treated. Also, make sure you clearly understand your organization’s first aid procedures. This can help prevent any eye injury from worsening before you obtain medical treatment.

The Hidden Eye Hazards in Your Workplace

Many eye injuries originate right inside the office. Computer vision syndrome (CVS) and eyestrain are caused by extensive use of computers, tablets, smartphones, and other electronic devices. To prevent CVS and eyestrain from developing, follow these tips:

  • Adjust the text size on your screen to a comfortable level
  • Avoid glares and reflections by altering your screen’s brightness
  • Place your computer at eye level and keep it about 20-26 inches away from your eyes
  • Follow the 20-20-20 break method: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away

Keep your eyes safe and healthy throughout your workday by identifying any potential hazards, wearing the right protective gear, taking preventative measures, and understanding your organization’s emergency procedures. Visit your eye doctor for regular comprehensive eye exams to ensure that you are keeping your eyes safe and healthy at work and in your leisure time.
