LASIK in the Military

In 2007, the US Air Force changed a long-standing policy banning recipients of LASIK surgery from flight and navigator training. This policy change was the result of years of studying the safety, effectiveness, and quality of life provided by LASIK surgery. Since then, the researchers have continued to study the benefits of LASIK in the military, and as a result over 312,000 laser vision corrective procedures have been completed to date.

The military’s interest in LASIK surgery and similar visual procedures came about because refractive surgeries eliminate the need for corrective lenses such as contacts and glasses. Combat zones are not exactly ideal environments for people with contact lenses. Eyeglasses are a liability as well, as a soldier could easily lose their sight with a broken lens.

After a series of long-term studies, the military acknowledged that the benefits of LASIK can be potentially lifesaving to a service member. That’s why laser vision correction has been approved for all aspects of military service, including aviation, special operations, and support roles. The studies performed found that both LASIK surgery and PRK provide safe and reliable results even for service members in highly active situations, like combat fighter pilots.

LASIK studies have even led to the approval of the use of LASIK for astronauts, deeming it suitable for low-pressure and low-oxygen situations. “If it’s good enough for an astronaut,” says Dr. Steven Schallhorn, a NASA consultant, “I think a lot of people can choose LASIK with a lot more confidence.”

Even if basic training or flight school isn’t in your near future, LASIK surgery is a tested, reliable and safe procedure that can help you regain your vision and take control of your destiny (without the need for contact lenses or glasses).
