5 Foods for Eye Health

A healthy lifestyle can have a significant impact on your overall health in life, which includes your eye health. By eating a clean diet, you can significantly reduce your chances of developing various eye health problems down the line.

Care for your eyesight and waistline by incorporating more of the following foods into your everyday life, and stop eating so many carbs, sugar, and dairy.

Fish

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are essential to your eye health, and can be found in most fatty fish. The best fish include salmon, tuna, and trout. These fish will give you omega-3s, which help protect your eyes from glaucoma and other eye health conditions.

Orange Fruits & Vegetables

Many of us are told to eat our carrots for our eye health when we are little and for a good reason! Orange-colored fruits and veggies are high in beta-carotene, which is a form of vitamin A, which is excellent for eye health! These foods include carrots (of course), sweet potatoes, mangos, apricots, oranges, and cantaloupe.

Leafy Green Vegetables

Leafy greens are full of vitamin C and E, which are both important vitamins for eye health. They are both powerful, potent antioxidants that lower your risk of long-term eye disease, including cataracts. These vitamins also protect your eyes against damaging free radicals. The best type of greens to eat are dark leafy greens. Kale, spinach, and collard are the most recommended.

Eggs

Eating eggs are great for your eye health, as well! The yolks in eggs contain vitamin A, which again is an essential vitamin for eye health. Not only does it prevent blindness and age-related vision decline, but it can be useful in treating Dry Eye Syndrome as well.

Seeds

Like fish, seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids. They are also a good source of vitamin E. Vitamin E can help improve vision and protect your eyes against free radical damage, which can lead to cataracts. Seeds that you should eat regularly include chia seeds, flax seeds, and hemp seeds.

By incorporating these healthy foods into your diet and regularly getting your eyes checked, you will be on the right track to great eye health. To make an appointment with the eye doctors at the Illinois Eye Center, call our office today at 309-243-2400 or walk in to be seen.
