5 Common LASIK Misconceptions

LASIK eye surgery is a refractive surgery for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. This procedure is one of the most popular elective surgeries, which comes with many misconceptions. Here are the top LASIK misconceptions that we’re debunking for you today:

Misconception #1: My vision will improve immediately after receiving LASIK eye surgery.

Although everyone is a little different, the vast majority of our LASIK patients achieve legal driving vision or better, the very next day. That is one of the most exciting advantages of the LASIK procedure: rapid visual recovery. The final result may take anywhere from a week to several weeks, but vision should improve gradually with each day.

Misconception #2: LASIK hasn’t been around long enough to be safe.

LASIK is considered one of the safest and most reliable surgeries today. LASIK has been around for over 25 years and complications are very rare. But even with the best surgeons, best-screened patients, and best equipment, the small risk of certain complications does remain.

Misconception #3: I’m too old for LASIK eye surgery.

While the “sweet spot” for the ideal LASIK candidate’s age tends to be between the ages of 25 and 40, this is a guideline, not a rule. The only way to find out if you’re the right age and candidate for LASIK eye surgery is to meet with an experienced eye surgeon who will get to know you and the best recommendation for your unique needs.

Misconception #4: Receiving LASIK eye surgery guarantees I will never have to wear glasses or contact lenses again.

For better or worse, there are no guarantees in any field of medicine and surgery. In our practice, over 98% of patients achieve 20/40 or better uncorrected visual acuity (i.e., legal limit to obtain an unrestricted Illinois driver’s license). This high percentage is due to our thorough examinations, committed staff, and fellowship-trained, board-certified ophthalmologists.

Misconception #5: I will be back to normal the same day I receive LASIK.

At Illinois Eye Center, we perform LASIK surgery on Fridays, as this allows most patients to return to work and normal activities after taking it easy for the weekend. While you should notice improved vision when you wake up Saturday morning, you still need to relax and avoid eye-straining activities for the weekend. Therefore, you should not receive LASIK eye surgery and then return to work to finish out your day as usual.
